Discover beautiful beaches, colorful neighborhoods, fresh seafood, and a different side of Korea.
When people think about traveling to South Korea, Seoul is usually the first destination that comes to mind. But there is another city that deserves a place on every traveler’s itinerary: Busan.Located on the southeastern coast of South Korea, Busan is the country’s second-largest city. It offers something wonderfully different from Seoul — ocean views, beautiful beaches, bustling seafood markets, colorful hillside villages, and a more relaxed coastal atmosphere.During my recent trip to Korea, I had the opportunity to travel to Busan with my son and his girlfriend. Sharing that journey reminded me that travel is not only about discovering beautiful places. It is also about creating memories with the people we love.If you’re planning your first visit to Busan, here are some places and experiences worth exploring.1. Haeundae Beach — Busan’s Famous BeachHaeundae is one of South Korea’s best-known beaches. With its long stretch of sand, modern hotels, restaurants, and lively streets, it is a wonderful place to experience Busan’s coastal lifestyle.Even if you’re not interested in swimming, walking along the beach, watching the waves, or enjoying a cup of coffee with an ocean view can be a lovely experience.Don’t miss:A relaxing walk along Haeundae BeachThe nearby Dongbaekseom coastal walking pathsThe Haeundae Blueline Park scenic train or Sky Capsule experienceCafés and restaurants around the beachTravel tip: Haeundae is a convenient area to stay if you enjoy beaches, restaurants, and a lively atmosphere.2. Gwangalli Beach — Beautiful Day and NightIf Haeundae is famous for its beach atmosphere, Gwangalli is especially memorable for its view of Gwangan Bridge. The bridge stretches across the water and becomes a beautiful nighttime landmark when illuminated.Along the beachfront, you’ll find restaurants, coffee shops, and places to sit and enjoy the ocean.Gwangalli is particularly appealing in the evening, when the lights of the city reflect across the water. My recommendation: Visit around sunset and stay until after dark. You’ll experience two very different views of the same beautiful coastline.3. Gamcheon Culture Village — A Colorful Hillside NeighborhoodGamcheon Culture Village is one of Busan’s most recognizable attractions.Colorful houses climb the hillside, creating a landscape that looks almost like a painting. The neighborhood is known for its narrow streets, murals, art installations, and small shops. As you explore, you’ll discover interesting corners and beautiful viewpoints overlooking the village.Travel tip: Wear comfortable shoes. The streets include hills and stairs, and people still live in this neighborhood, so please respect residents’ privacy.4. Jagalchi Market — Experience Busan Through FoodOne of the best ways to understand a city is through its food.Jagalchi Market is a famous seafood market where you can discover the variety of fresh seafood available along Korea’s southern coast.Busan’s food culture reflects its relationship with the ocean. If you enjoy trying local dishes, consider:Dwaeji gukbap (돼지국밥): A comforting pork-and-rice soup associated with Busan.Milmyeon (밀면): Chilled wheat noodles, especially refreshing in warm weather.Eomuk (어묵): Korean fish cakes, a popular Busan specialty.Fresh seafood: A wonderful way to experience the city’s coastal food culture. You don’t need to be an adventurous eater to enjoy Busan. Sometimes a simple bowl of hot soup can become one of the most memorable meals of a trip.5. Haedong Yonggungsa Temple — A Temple Beside the SeaMany traditional Korean temples are located in the mountains, but Haedong Yonggungsa offers a different setting. This Buddhist temple sits along a rocky coastline, with beautiful views of the ocean. The combination of traditional architecture, stone pathways, and the sea makes it one of Busan’s distinctive sightseeing destinations. It can become crowded, so visiting earlier in the day may make the experience more enjoyable.6. Huinnyeoul Culture Village — A Quiet Coastal EscapeIf you enjoy scenic walks and small cafés, consider visiting Huinnyeoul Culture Village.Located along the coastline of Yeongdo, this neighborhood is known for its ocean views, narrow lanes, and artistic atmosphere. It’s a lovely place to slow down, enjoy the scenery, and experience a quieter side of Busan. As with Gamcheon, remember that Huinnyeoul is a residential neighborhood.A Simple Two-Day Busan ItineraryDay 1 — Beaches and Coastal ViewsMorning: Explore Haeundae Beach and enjoy a seaside walk.Afternoon: Visit the Haeundae Blueline Park area and take in the coastal scenery.Evening: Head to Gwangalli Beach for dinner and nighttime views of Gwangan Bridge.Day 2 — Culture and Local FoodMorning: Explore Gamcheon Culture Village.Lunch: Visit the Jagalchi Market and Nampo-dong area for local food.Afternoon: Browse shops, try street food, or enjoy a coffee break.Evening: Enjoy one last meal before leaving Busan. If you have a third day, consider visiting Haedong Yonggungsa Temple or Huinnyeoul Culture Village. How to Get to Busan From SeoulFor many travelers, the easiest option is the KTX high-speed train. The journey from Seoul Station to Busan Station typically takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours, depending on the train service.Busan is a large city, and popular attractions can be far apart. Plan your days by neighborhood rather than trying to visit everything at once.Subways, buses, and taxis are useful for getting around.Helpful travel tips:Use a Korean navigation app such as Naver Map or KakaoMap.Carry a transportation card for public transit.Check train schedules and attraction reservations in advance.Bring comfortable walking shoes. Why Busan Deserves a Place on Your Korea ItinerarySeoul offers the excitement of a fast-moving capital, but Busan introduces visitors to another side of Korea. Here, the mountains meet the ocean, traditional markets coexist with modern neighborhoods, and busy city streets lead toward beautiful beaches. For me, traveling in Korea is becoming about more than visiting destinations. It is about reconnecting with the country where I was born, discovering familiar places with a new perspective, and sharing meaningful moments with the people I love.If you’re planning a trip to South Korea, don’t stop at Seoul. Give yourself time to discover Busan. You may find that some of your favorite memories of Korea are waiting beside the ocean.Missing Seoul — Exploring Korea, reconnecting with my roots, and sharing the journey.Travel information and availability may change.
